How did you start your writing career

As I said in my earlier post, I started writing about 4 years ago. What made me start in the first place was that I got to thinking of all the technology we are discovering to the point that we are reaching the Jetsons age. Okay maybe not quite that far yet, but we are getting there slow but sure.
So I started wondering what would happen if somehow, someone got inadvertently transported to a time say, 1865, right at the tail end of the Civil War. How would he face living in this primitive life where there is no bathroom, electric light, horses as transportation, etc. If you remember the Beverly Hillbillies of the '60's. The premise of the show was a family who lived a primitive life in the Ozark Mountains and then got thrust in the big city of Beverly Hills, California. The showed the naivete of the Clampetts trying to adjust to the technology of that era.
So I took pen in hand--yes, I do write that way to get my muse going, and started writing a love story about a doctor and his friend who are accidentally thrown into a time warp where they are now in the year 1865, and just like the Clampetts, trying to adjust to this primitive life.
I am still working on the book...four years later. Our beloved CEO of eXtasy, Tina Haveman said it still needs work. Kind of humbling considering I've written 6 books and contributed to 2 anthologies. LOL
Anyway, I would be interested in knowing, how, you, my fellow writers got the writing bug and also took pen in hand--or put fingers to the keyboard. What motivated you to start writing?
Also give me some encouragement to keep working on the above story, despite what our evil, but lovable CEO Tina Haveman. (Winking at ya, Tina.)
For those of you readers who are contemplating writing, just do it. Yes, you will get rejections, but just keep plugging away. You will make it, I promise you. All of the authors at eXtasy and Devine Destinies have been there--dealt with rejection, but we all plugged away and here we are.

Finally, if you are new to this blog, please follow me. I will try to have a new post every week. :)

  1. Hi Mark,

Interesting how different people get started in different ways. The first story I remember coming up with was about a mermaid and a sailor. I was VERY young. I don't know if it was ever written down, but I would imagine it was pretty rough if it was. I wasn't in school yet. LOL

As for when did I become serious about this craft. I've got to say when I discovered the internet. I'd always created stories, books, bad poetry, but never dreamed I'd be published. I had no idea people like me could get published. I mean, I'm just a mom, a wife...no education to become a writer.

When Roy Larkin, of Amatory Ink (a now defunct e-publishing house) contacted me, I was flabbergasted <--understatement of the century!!

Anyhoo, the rest, as they say, is history. He taught me a lot, I've learned more since he folded and I'm hoping to continue learning for a long time to come. It's been amazing

And yes, Tina is evil... and a slave driver... and she's not here. LOL

    Hugs

  3. Marc,
I knew most of my life I wanted to put my ideas out there for others to read. It was a long time in coming, but eventually I submitted and was published.

The writing road isn't an easy one to travel on, but I say to those with an idea burning in their head, to get it down, polish it, and submit.

  4. Hi Hales,
I promise I will start writing non Xmas stories. LOL In fact I am working on a delectable nibble which might turn into a novella or a full fledged novel. It will depend on where my writing muse will take me.
Thanks for responding to my blog. :)

  5. Hi Jude
Thanks for responding to my blog. You mentioned that you started writing about a mermaid and a sailor. How interesting. I contributed to an anthology for eXtasy. The title of the book is Emerald Envisiage. My contribution was The Pirate and the Mermaid.
If you want, give me your email and I will send you a copy of the book. :)

  6. Hi Mary
Yeah, you're right. The road to writing isn't an easy one. In fact you almost have to develop a thick skin to absorb rejections from publishers. But just like in the entertainment world, someone will discover you and then you're off. :)
Thanks for responding to my blog.
